McMack Attack

July 16, 2008

My props to head football coach Greg McMackin.  I think he was a boxer in a former life.  It’s always great seeing him and according to the coach, he’ll never forget the time when I was camping out in front of June Jones’ office waiting for his resignation.  I blocked McMackin from entering a door with my foot so that we in the media could try to get an interview from him since he was a leading candidate.  Anyway, I had no idea that when we did this boxing fitness segment with him that he’d hit so hard.  The video says it all.  My lipstick ended up on the punching bag.

Dangers of Challenging Athletes: We Fall!

May 5, 2008
Ryan Ozawa, our lost blogger, took a bad looking spill last Friday during a sports challenge against the U.H. Warriors.   He wasn’t seriously hurt, but I know his ego was bruised.  Dan was really worried one of the Warriors would get hurt. Instead, Ryan got a strawberry on his knee and we got jamba juice acai with granola on our clothes. It looked like vomit on my clothes. The same thing happened to me when I fell 2 years ago in a mini-decathlon against Olympian Bryan Clay.  Now I’ve learned when challenging athletes, you can never win, so just take your time and don’t push yourself too hard.

Here’s Ryan’s 2008 fall.

Tadd Fujikawa: Professional Edition

July 13, 2007

Tadd Fujikawa dropped in for a visit, a day after turning pro. We can confirm for you that it is the same Tadd Fujikawa who visited us as the amateur who dazzled the golf world at the Sony Open.

But there was one difference:. Tadd came with just his parents last time around. This time, mom Lori was back, along with his new agent/attorney Kevin Bell (in the dark jacket) and two other people, who I think were Bell’s assistant (on the high chair) and a local publicist (not in the photo; the gentleman in the glasses is the publicist for another guest, which I’ll discuss shortly). I looked at the group accompanying Tadd, and told him, “I can tell you’ve turned pro; now you have an entourage.” His response? He cracked that big smile and started laughing. As for the entourage, they remained pretty much in the background. There was no advice, at least in the studio, on what to say or how to say it, no extra makeup people. They just followed Tadd around, and Tadd’s still Tadd. We wish him luck in his pro career.

Got something to say about the Taddster turning pro? Click on “comments” below.

————-

The first thing Tadd said to me as he stepped into the studio was, “Oooooh! I smell food!”

This is some of the food from one of the groups that will be at the sixth annual Korean Festival, tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Kapi`olani Park (and the reason for the publicist with the glasses mentioned above). As with good food cooked up on the show, it didn’t get anywhere close to the end of its shelf life.

Hot Dogs!

July 6, 2007

This morning, we finally settled on a long-standing bet. To recap: Dan and Dave picked the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Championship, while Mahea and I picked the Cleveland Cavaliers. You’ll recall the Spurs swept the series. And it took this long to figure out what we would do, as the losers. Taking a cue from the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest on Coney Island, we tried to eat at least one hot dog from Great Hawaiian Hot Dogs.

Mike “Ramsey” Fujita cooked up the weiners, and I think I won, finishing my hot dog first.

Of course, seemingly on cue, there were two dogs and their owner on the sidewalk behind us, and one of them was a wiener dog. Of course I fed them, and the dogs enjoyed the dogs.

The crew didn’t mind that we only ate one dog each. Fujita stayed afterward to cook up some ‘ono steak hot dogs, which promptly disappeared. The dogs didn’t get those. Oh, yes — one was delivered to Dave Hisaka at the traffic management center a few blocks away, fresh out of the cooker.

Coach Nash

April 19, 2007

Bob Nash paid a visit to the newscast this morning for the first time as the head coach of the University of Hawai`i men’s basketball team. He talked with Dan about his new job, including his decision not to renew the contract of assistant coach Alika Smith. The longtime assistant and member of the famed “Fabulous Five” also discussed recruiting. You can see the video here.

We Had Tadd!

February 7, 2007

Moanalua High School sophomore — and unexpected Sony Open golf star — Tadd Fujikawa appeared on the newscast last month. Very cool young man. He came with his proud, down-to-earth, and at the time, slightly frazzled parents, who were still dealing with their son’s sudden fame and all the attention he was getting.

The Chat About Tadd

January 17, 2007

The talk of the town has been the amazing performance of Tadd Fujikawa at this past weekend’s Sony Open. He got a lot of attention that spilled over after the tournament into his first day back to reality as a sophomore at Moanalua High School.

We invited viewers to weigh in on what they thought of the hubbub surrounding Fujikawa. Here’s a sampling:

It is a wonderful thing to praise this young man for the performance over the past weekend. But it has become ridiculous to consider him a phenom. Enough is enough. Send him back to school, and have him move on without help from the news media. — George Kauhi

I agree with George Kauhi. I think the media puts too much “hype” on these young players. With age comes wisdom and experience and we should allow the young players time to develop their skills consistently. The sad part about it all is that the media [that] will make you famous, is the same media that will burn you at the stake and gossip about you and expose very personal things. – Steve Baldwin

What is up with Mr. Kauhi? He should be proud of this young man who needless to say is an amateur and kept pace with well known professionals. I Love Tadd. He has such a wonderful personality, and I enjoy the media coverage that follows him. He’s very deserving of all of the attention that he’s getting. –TracyLynn Sylva

Like it or not, we may or may not be helping. Tadd Fujikawa will appear on the newscast tomorrow morning, and perhaps we’ll find out what he thinks about all this.

Meanwhile, we always appreciate your comments, whether or not we agree with them. You can always drop us a line or two at morningmail@thehawaiichannel.com

Aloha,
Ben.

"Sunrise" At the Open

January 13, 2007

Just adding to Mahelani’s previous post. Dan said he was walking along the greens at Wai`alae Country Club, covering the opening round of the Sony Open, when a group of pro golfers was going in the opposite direction on the fairway. He didn’t recognize who they were. One of them yelled out, “Hey, Dan! How’s the Viagra?”

Turns out our newscast was on in the clubhouse yesterday morning. And the golfers and their caddies were watching. You never know.
