Talking Tats with Carey Hart

January 25, 2007

Former motocrosser, husband of rock star Pink, reality tv star and founder of the Hart and Huntington tattoo shop in Vegas threw a grand opening party for his Waikiki shop at the Osake Lounge last Thursday. Definitely a diverse crowd from a city council member to barely legal adults with lots of tattoos. Carey was really cool and seemed to handle all the attention from his adoring fans with ease.

We had a nice interview with him on our morning show and I asked him what was the most unusual requested tattoo. I suspected the answer would involve private parts and it did. Too each his or her own and more power to you if you could handle that kind of pain. I am tattooless and never felt the urge to get one. I like them and they’ve definitely gone from taboo to mainstream, but I’m just too much of a wimp to tolerate that needle and permanent ink. And Butterflies and flowers out of a sketch book are nice, but I would rather go for something unique and meaningful. What that would be… I have no idea.

By the way, Carey has almost his entire upper body inked with a cool tattoos that look like one and he’s quickly running out of space for more. Though I’ve read that his wife did tattoo one of his butt checks. Ouch!

The Chat About Tadd

January 17, 2007

The talk of the town has been the amazing performance of Tadd Fujikawa at this past weekend’s Sony Open. He got a lot of attention that spilled over after the tournament into his first day back to reality as a sophomore at Moanalua High School.

We invited viewers to weigh in on what they thought of the hubbub surrounding Fujikawa. Here’s a sampling:

It is a wonderful thing to praise this young man for the performance over the past weekend. But it has become ridiculous to consider him a phenom. Enough is enough. Send him back to school, and have him move on without help from the news media. — George Kauhi

I agree with George Kauhi. I think the media puts too much “hype” on these young players. With age comes wisdom and experience and we should allow the young players time to develop their skills consistently. The sad part about it all is that the media [that] will make you famous, is the same media that will burn you at the stake and gossip about you and expose very personal things. – Steve Baldwin

What is up with Mr. Kauhi? He should be proud of this young man who needless to say is an amateur and kept pace with well known professionals. I Love Tadd. He has such a wonderful personality, and I enjoy the media coverage that follows him. He’s very deserving of all of the attention that he’s getting. –TracyLynn Sylva

Like it or not, we may or may not be helping. Tadd Fujikawa will appear on the newscast tomorrow morning, and perhaps we’ll find out what he thinks about all this.

Meanwhile, we always appreciate your comments, whether or not we agree with them. You can always drop us a line or two at morningmail@thehawaiichannel.com

"Sunrise" At the Open

January 13, 2007

Just adding to Mahelani’s previous post. Dan said he was walking along the greens at Wai`alae Country Club, covering the opening round of the Sony Open, when a group of pro golfers was going in the opposite direction on the fairway. He didn’t recognize who they were. One of them yelled out, “Hey, Dan! How’s the Viagra?”

Turns out our newscast was on in the clubhouse yesterday morning. And the golfers and their caddies were watching. You never know.

Morning Show Sun "Rise"

January 11, 2007

I must admit, it’s always fun saying something that is completely unexpected and even shocking to get a reaction from people. It happens more often in real life than while anchoring the news, but today’s news took me there. The story wasn’t in the line-up in our newscast, but I wanted to slip it in.

The perfect moment came as I tossed to Dan out in the field at the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club. I said, “Dan here’s some breaking news… Pfizer may soon offer Viagra over the counter… what do you think about that?” The shot then when to a beet red-faced Dan. He tried to say something about not really needing the drug when I interrupted him and said, “Dan, did that story get a rise out of you?” Then Dan looked like had been left almost speechless.

I heard everyone in the control room where the show is directed gasped with their mouths opened. Ben and I cracked up watching Dan struggling to keep it together after the Viagra bombshell and move on to golf.

Ahh, it was all in a days fun with my colleagues. Male impotence is a serious health issue and I’m sure someone including my bosses won’t be happy about my off-the cuff comments, but in the words of Katie Couric, if they can’t take joke, they can take a “supository.”
